Soundroots

The Dutch Soundlings collective is a group of international professionals working with sound, which I’m proud to be a part of. During the annual renowned Gaudeamus Muziekweek, known for their contemporary classical programme, Soundlings is organising Soundroots: A poetic theory and trail on hearing the secrets of plants. For Everyday Listening I’m always on the lookout for sound art with a poetic layer that tells a story or makes you wonder. Soundroots does just that.

Below is their teaser for an ongoing crowdfunding campaign. It would be wonderful if you could help Soundlings achieve their goal to make the on-site artworks even better! Here’s the campaign (dutch site).

Consisting of a short talk, a trail of almost thirty sound installations and a spatial composition in the old Botanical Gardens of Utrecht, the collective plays with what’s real and what’s not. By doing this, they’re balancing between actual theory of biology and technology, and poetics and mythology, making for a trail that leaves the visitor wondering. Visit Soundroots during the Gaudeamus Muziekweek on the 13th and 14th of September!

Audio Visual

Audio Visual, a project by Peter Crawley, shows us the waveforms of popular songs, neatly stitched on a piece of cardboard. Here we see a visual representation of Whole Lotta Love, with the waveform of one minute of audio on each line.

Next to these visualized waveforms Peter Crawley also creates stitched art themed around architecture and typography. Printed versions of his artwork can be found at Print Process

Circulator

Jim Blashfield kindly sent me a message about his video and sound installation Circulator now being finished, and scheduled for installation at the Brightwater Environmental Centre north of Seattle’s Lake Washington, in Spring.

It’s amazing to see the detail of the visual material. This realism is fortified by sound, which plays an important role in Circulator. We hear a nice combination of realistic sounds and dream-like musical sequences.

The installation shows the artists impression of the water cycle. Watch the video to hear Jim Blashfield explain the installation and if you want to know more about the artist and his work, visit his website at www.blashfieldstudio.com.

Five Sound Questions to Oscar Sol

A very interesting project featured on Everyday Listening this year was Oscillare, An Interactive Dawn, created by Oscar Sol and his collective Electronic Performers.

A good reason to ask this man our five sound questions. Read more about Oscar Sol and his projects on the Electronic Performers website: www.electronicperformers.in.

1. What sound from your childhood made the most impression on you?
In my parents house there’s a big old clock with a iron man that hits a bell every hour… I listened to this since I was born and it’s still working! Long live the man who built that clock!
2. How do you listen to the world around you?
It’s noisy… I live in a city…
