Ode to the North

My brother Michiel takes part in the Fjällräven Polar competition. His goal: a trip to the Norwegian and Swedish north, navigating a dog sled trough 330 kilometers of snow. He would be thankful for your vote, so please consider clicking the vote button on the Fjällräven Polar website

For his promotional movie (he’s a motion graphics designer) I initially created some frozen sounds using the wonderful Spectral Dronemaker from the Soundmagic Spectral plug-in suite by Michael Norris. But Michiel found them a bit too haunting and wanted to put the emphasis on the beauty and timelessness of his photo’s, so used some simple sine waves instead.

Works For Turntable by Stephen Cornford

After his great answers to the Five Sound Questions I would like to share Stephen Cornford’s Works For Turntable with you. A very nice composition for kinetic sculptures on ‘prepared turntables’.

The strength of the work lies in the combination of the different sounds, and by adding and removing layers the repetition of the individual parts never becomes boring.

It is also the mechanical nature of the looping sounds that keeps them interesting to listen to. Unlike a lot of contemporary electronic loop-based music with the same sounds copy-pasted over and over again, in these Works For Turntable the looping sound is never exactly the same, there are slight variations in every turn.

Trimpin: the sound of invention

I have not seen the documentary yet, but watching this trailer makes me absolutely want to! In Trimpin: the sound of invention, San Fransisco filmmaker Peter Esmonde follows the artist Trimpin on his inspiring journey into the world of sound.

Trimpin is a wizard when it comes to sound installations, music making machines and building new musical instruments. In this documentary we can see him collaborate with the Kronos Quartet, designing a perpetual motion sculpture, building a tower of self-tuning, automatic electric guitars, among others.
